How we calculate
The method behind the numbers in “Your impact”, in plain language, with sources and caveats.
In brief
When you repair something instead of buying new, the world is spared producing a new item. We estimate how much that amounts to.
The numbers on My page are estimates, not measurements. They build on published life-cycle analyses from research bodies and manufacturers, combined with a deliberately cautious calculation: where sources disagree, we use the lowest credible value.
We only count work that actually extends the life of your equipment. We never assume you would definitely have bought new.
What we count
This is how the numbers are grouped, honestly labelled by how certain they are.
Actual figures
Counted directly from your orders. No estimation. Hours saved, kg of equipment in use, number of services and repairs, parts replaced, oldest item, kroner spent and customer since.
Price estimates
Compared against a basket of new products we price four times a year. Kroner saved versus buying new.
Climate estimates
Modelled. The most uncertain numbers on the page, and we say so. CO₂ estimates are shown only once this method is published.
What we deliberately do not count
Waxing, tuning and cosmetic work.
It makes the equipment better, but it does not extend its life. We do not count it.
Transport.
We collect and deliver in batches instead of each customer driving themselves. But over half the passenger cars in Oslo are now electric, so the actual climate saving is under one kilo of CO₂e per order. We think that is too little to present as an environmental argument, and instead show how much time you save.
Garden equipment.
We have not found a life-cycle analysis of garden-equipment manufacturing that we trust enough. Until we do, we show only actual figures for this category, with no climate estimates.
That you would have bought new.
We do not know what you would have done if we did not exist. Perhaps you would have kept riding a worn bike, or bought used. So we count only a share of the production we estimate the repair actually replaced, between 30% and 90%, depending on how extensive the repair was.
How we calculate
For each repair we multiply three numbers:
- 1How much CO₂ it costs to produce a new item of the same type.
- 2How much of the item’s life the repair extends.
- 3How likely the item would otherwise have been replaced.
CO₂ estimate = production footprint
× (life extended ÷ expected total life)
× probability of replacementCredit table
| Repair type | Life extended (yr) | Probability of replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic / tuningDoes not extend life, so it counts nothing. | 0 | 0 |
| Standard serviceSmall credit. | 0.5 | 0.3 |
| Wear part replacedChain, cassette, brakes, edges, base. This is the main case. | 1.5 | 0.5 |
| Major repairGears, motor, battery, frame, binding. The item was arguably unusable. | 3 | 0.7 |
| RescueThe item was about to be discarded. Flagged manually. | 4 | 0.9 |
We publish the multipliers on purpose. A customer who sees that a wax job scores zero can trust the number on an overhaul.
The numbers we use
The complete factor table. Each row: value, range, source with direct link and publication year. Where a value is derived rather than directly sourced, we say so.
| Category | Value (production) | Range | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bike | 90 kg | 74–140 | European Cyclists' Federation / TNO~96 kg CO₂e for en ~20 kg pendlersykkel inkl. levetids-vedlikehold. 90 brukt som konservativt anslag. |
| E-bike | 130 kg | 110–160 | European Cyclists' Federation; Polytechnique InsightsECF: 134 kg CO₂e. Batteri ~20 kg, motor ~37 kg separat (Polytechnique Insights). 130 brukt som konservativt anslag. |
| Alpine skis | 29 kg | 29–46 | Extrem/RISE; Luthe et al. 2013 (2013)RISE: 28,8 kg/par (vannkraft-produksjon). Luthe et al. 2013 LCA: 22,6 kg per enkelt ski (≈45/par). Lav ende brukt. |

Adopted July 2026. · Expected total life: Bike 10 år · E-bike 10 år · Alpine skis 8 år · Cross-country skis 8 år · E-scooter 5 år
Worked example
Ola brought in a 6-year-old commuter bike. The workshop replaced the chain, cassette and brake pads.
- Production of an equivalent new bike: 90 kg CO₂e (European Cyclists’ Federation)
- Life extended: 1.5 years of an expected life of 10 years → factor 0.15
- Probability of replacement when wear parts are replaced: 0.5
90 × 0.15 × 0.5 = 6.8 kg CO₂e
Ola paid 1 340 kr. An equivalent new bike costs from about 8 900 kr.
Uncertainty
Life-cycle analyses disagree. The production footprint of a bike is estimated at between 74 and 140 kg CO₂e in different studies, and we use 90. For alpine skis the sources range between 29 and 46 kg per pair, and we use 29.
We consistently choose the low end. That makes our numbers less impressive, and more likely correct.
